Farming in Tolaga Bay, a breathtaking part of Tairāwhiti/Gisborne on New Zealand’s North Island, Henry Hindmarsh knows the value of modern technology blended with generations of experience. As one of the first places in the world to see the sunrise, Tolaga Bay is spectacularly beautiful, while being a rugged and remote area to farm. Sheep and cattle have grazed the surrounding pastures for generations, and Henry, alongside his wife Sarah and two young daughters Billie and Harley, is deeply rooted in the land on which his parents, Meyric and Leigh began farming decades ago.
“The farm has been in the family for a long time,” says Henry. “My parents started with the breeding block 34 years ago, and we’ve expanded from there.” Like many multi-generational farmers, they rely on teamwork and a network of trusted contractors for fencing, digging, and other specialised tasks.
He was born into the farm, but Henry has crisscrossed the country as a shepherd, gaining experience to be brought back to Fenland Station. The family farm has grown over time, now encompassing two properties: a steep hill country breeding block acquired by Henry’s parents 34 years ago and a predominantly flat home farm. Sharing the workload are three permanent staff members including a Block Manager, a General and a Junior Shepherd, while casuals are called on during peak periods. Henry’s parents remain involved too, giving a hand from time to time.
Henry and his team have been using Mobble for two years and it's been pivotal in helping to keep the farm running smoothly. Initially drawn to its simplicity, Henry and his team quickly recognised Mobble's potential and it’s been making short work out of meaty tasks since then.
“Before Mobble, we only had paper maps,” he explains. “But now, between me and the other manager, we’ve been using Mobble flat out. Our junior shepherd found it really helpful when she started. She wasn’t sure where a few paddocks were, but with Mobble, she could find her way around easily.”
The detailed farm maps have also been a game changer when expanding the property. “Mapping out the new land was so straightforward. It gave us a clear view of everything, making it much easier to manage.”
For Henry, efficient audits are crucial and Mobble has delivered outstanding results. With three audits in the past year, including a New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme (NZFAP) check, Mobble proved invaluable.
“Audits were a breeze,” he says. “Pretty much every one flew straight through. They’re probably the quickest audits I’ve had because all the records were right there. Between the drench records and chemical inventory, having everything in one place makes it really easy. Whether we’re drenching or spraying, logging batch numbers is simple.”
Henry also makes good use of Mobble Connect, linking his mum, who handles the farm accounts and any farm contractors to the platform. “Mobble Connect is such a helpful tool.”
Even contractors benefit from Mobble’s intuitive system. “Our local contractor uses Mobble to find his way around. I can tell him the paddock name, and he goes straight to it.”
With a deep respect for tradition and a keen eye on innovation, Henry Hindmarsh represents a new generation of farmers combining hands-on experience with smart technology. Mobble has become a trusted tool, simplifying operations, enhancing teamwork and saving time. This allows Henry to focus on what he loves most - spending time with family and continuing to do sheep dog trialling on the side, with his trusted pal, Prudence.
